What we did
Dated wallpaper in a living room and bedroom was stripped, the walls were repaired and skim-coated, and both rooms were painted in a soft neutral with fresh white trim.
Two layers of old wallpaper came off with steam and scoring. We washed off all the glue residue, skim-coated the torn spots and sealed the walls with a primer made for walls that had wallpaper.
Then two coats of eggshell on the walls, flat white on the ceilings and semi-gloss on the trim. The furniture was moved and covered the whole time.
